A morning circle is a great way to start the day with the preschoolers. All children gather in a circle with their teachers. The morning circle is a time to orient everyone to the day ahead and to look at the upcoming activities and tasks. During the morning circle, each child has a turn to talk about their thoughts and feelings. The morning circle also offers a great opportunity for singing and reading together.

After the morning circle, children are divided into smaller groups. Each group focuses on a specific activity, such as reading stories, developing math skills, or creating artwork. The activity-based learning changes daily or weekly, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to participate in various activities. These activities are planned to be age-appropriate, and individual support is provided as needed.

Lunch

After morning activities, children are provided with a healthy, warm lunch. During lunch time, adults provide a model for good table manners and assist children with their eating. It is important that children taste different foods and practise their eating skills. Lunchtime is an important part of the day when children have a chance to sit down, chat with their friends and teachers, and practise their table manners in a positive environment.

Story time / rest / sleep

Calming down and resting are very important skills for children. After a busy day, children need some quiet time to rest and perhaps sleep. During rest time, some children may sleep while others can listen to music or stories, which provides them with opportunities to calm down. We live in a busy and hectic world, so children need to learn from an early age how to calm down and rest.

Free play

Free play is an important part of children’s learning. After lunch and rest, children join free play at their own pace. Some children may start playing while others are still resting, considering each child’s individual rhythm.

Free play doesn’t necessarily mean children can play whatever they want. They might have smaller groups to choose from, such as playing with cars, dolls, or board games. Teachers might decide beforehand what types of games and activities are available.

Playtime itself is free, and the play can develop freely under the supervision of teachers.

It's time for another set of activity-based learning in small groups. Children might continue their activities in the same groups as in the morning, or they may form new groups depending on the activities. Some groups might also take part in outdoor activities.

Learning in smaller groups is guided by the teacher, providing opportunities for teaching moments. Although children might seem to be playing, they are actually learning all the time. Teachers have planned the activities with age-appropriate aims and goals to ensure effective learning.

After activities, it's time for a snack. Having a clear structure with designated times for eating and activities creates a safe environment for children to learn. Eating regularly also boosts children's energy and aids their learning and concentration. Children enjoy a healthy snack, have some time for free play, and then go home flexibly.

Parents come to pick up their children. During pick-up, teachers have a chance to talk with the parents about their children’s day, including what they’ve been up to and any special happenings. Communication between parents and teachers is very important. Mornings and afternoons provide key moments for both parents and teachers to discuss the child's learning and behaviour.

It’s crucial for parents to know if there has been a special incident during the day, just as it is important for teachers to know if anything significant has occurred at home that might affect the child’s behaviour. Open and positive communication benefits both sides.
